Bangkok city is set to await the opening night of yet another remarkable Broadway theatre performance in Thailand called Playhouse Thailand Theatre that is a spin off from the successful Playhouse Theatre in Chiang Mai. It promises to be a performance that “will tug at the heartstrings but most times tickle the grin glands.” complete with repertoires of tap dancing, classical ballet, hip hop and contemporary styles not seen in other cabaret performances and thus a niche in the cabaret market in Thailand. Opening at its new location in the Asia hotel not far from Victory Monumen and with ample parking as well as transfers from any hotel, it is easily accessed and one should arrive in plenty of time for their nightly shows.
At the moment, preparations are underway for the completion of the stage, props for the show, sound and lighting system as well as rehearsals by old and new members alike. Perfection is the keyword for opening night in October. The idea for Playhouse Thailand was to bring something different to the theatrical arts in Bangkok which was formulated mostly from “ladyboy ” performers but Playhouse Thailand has a mixed casts of male and female performers trained in various dance routines and entertainment disciplines. Choreography is of Western origin and handled by a westerner called locally a “farang” by Thais. In total there will be 18 sets of performances lasting an hour or slightly more. There are also going to be some nifty works of art on display which are sure to be a delight.
There will be fresh new faces on the stage and this performance promises to be something of a difference from the one in Chiang Mai that all Broadway theatre enthusiasts are patiently waiting for. The previous performances attracted not just visitors and tourists but also the local Thais who had an appreciation for good Broadway plays in Thailand, so this new upcoming opening performance will be a performance to look forward too. The current site at Asia Hotel used to be occupied by Calypso Cabaret which is now relocated to Asiatique the Riverfront. Massive renovations and stage settings are underway to give the theatre a different feel and ambience altogether. The ticketing booth will be located at the lobby near the hotel reception counter making it easy to purchase tickets but be warned that tickets are expected to be sold out on a regular basis and it is advisable to purchase tickets early for performances. Price for tickets have yet to be ascertained but we will keep our readers and fans informed once they become available.
